Abstract

HUMAN ’20 is the third workshop of a series for the ACM Hypertext conferences. It has a strong focus on the user and thus is complementary to the strong machine analytics research direction that could be experienced in previous conferences.

The user-centric view on hypertext not only includes user interfaces and interaction, but also discussions about hypertext application domains. Furthermore, the workshop raises the question of how original hypertext ideas (e.g., Doug Engelbart’s “augmenting human intellect” or Frank Halasz’ “hypertext as a medium for thinking and communication”) can improve today’s hypertext systems.

1 RELEVANCE TO THE ACM HYPERTEXT 2020 THEMES

HUMAN ’20 is a SIGWEB sponsored workshop and affiliated with the 31st ACM Conference on Hypertext and Social Media, to which it shows many connections. It fosters the discussion about different hypertext domains and, more important, it explicitly combines original hypertext research ideas with recent hypertext research trends. Human factors are present in all tracks of Hypertext 2020. Thus, this workshop fosters cross-cutting discussions and the development of new ideas.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that HT ’20 is held virtually, the HUMAN ’20 workshop will take place online later in 2020. This will make it easier for participants to follow both events HT ’20 and HUMAN ’20.

2 SCOPE

Historically, hypertext is strongly connected to human factors. This can be experienced by the early work provided by hypertext pioneers, such as Doug Engelbart or Ted Nelson. However, recent hypertext research focuses mostly on machine analytics. This workshop wants to broaden the scope again by taking the human back into consideration. In order to accomplish that, the workshop combines original hypertext ideas with recent hypertext research trends. Furthermore, it tries to consolidate different hypertext areas by looking at those from a human factors viewpoint.

HUMAN also encourages to submit work that has an interdisciplinary perspective. It targets both scientists and developers from various research and business areas who consider a critical and open-minded discussion of original hypertext ideas with the goal to identify and solve today’s hypertext challenges.

Relevant topics include (but are not limited to):

Systems for augmenting human intellect

User-centric hypertext systems

User interfaces and interactions

Cognitive aspects and hypertext

Collaboration and hypertext

Information structuring

Hypertext used for human communication

Hypertext and decision making

Spatial hypertext

Annotation services

Organizing information

Information structuring in digital humanities

User perspectives in adaptive hypertext

Social aspects of humans using hypertext

Intercultural aspects in hypertext

3 KEYNOTE SPEAKER

The HUMAN ’20 keynote will be offered by Jacob O. Wobbrock, who has also received the Douglas Engelbart Award for Best Paper at the 30th ACM Hypertext Conference 2019.

Jacob O. Wobbrock is a Professor of human-computer interaction (HCI) in The Information School, and, by courtesy, in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington, which, in 2019 and 2020, U.S. News ranked the 10th-best university in the world. He co-founded the multi-departmental DUB Group, the MHCI+D degree, and the CREATE research center focused on advancing accessible technology.

Prof. Wobbrock’s work seeks to scientifically understand people’s experiences of computers and information, and to improve those experiences through design and engineering, especially for people with disabilities. His specific research topics include input & interaction techniques, human performance measurement & modeling, HCI research & design methods, mobile computing, and accessible computing.

Prof. Wobbrock has co-authored ≈160 peer-reviewed publications and received 25 paper awards, including 7 best papers and 8 honorable mentions from ACM CHI, the flagship conference in HCI. For his work on accessible computing, he received the 2017 SIGCHI Social Impact Award and the 2019 SIGACCESS ASSETS Paper Impact Award. He was named the Most Influential Scholar in HCI by the Chinese citation-ranking system AMiner for 2018, and runner-up for 2020. He was also inducted into the prestigious CHI Academy in 2019. His work has been covered in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, USA Today, and other outlets. He is the recipient of an NSF CAREER award and 7 other National Science Foundation grants. He serves on the editorial board of ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction. His advisees have been hired at Harvard, Cornell, Colorado, Washington, Brown, Simon Fraser, and elsewhere.

Prof. Wobbrock received his B.S. with Honors in Symbolic Systems and his M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1998 and 2000, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in HumanComputer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University in 2006. Upon graduation, he was honored with CMU’s School of Computer Science Distinguished Dissertation Award.
